European Health Interview Survey (EHIS)
European Health Interview Survey (EHIS) is a European public health survey organized by the EU's statistical agency, Eurostat. EHIS collects data on health status, health care use, health determinants, and socio-economic background variables.
The aim with the EHIS-project is to enable comparative data between countries in Europe regarding health and health related factors.
A collaboration between the Public Health Agency of Sweden and Eurostat
EHIS is a European public health survey organized by Eurostat. The survey is carried out simultaneously in all EU countries and some non-EU countries in Europe, such as Norway and Iceland.
In order to obtain comparable statistical information and data, all countries use a similar questionnaire.
The Public Health Agency of Sweden carries out the Swedish part of EHIS according to a government assignment.
About selection and data collection
Since the launch of EHIS in 2006, data collections have been carried out at five-to-six-year intervals. Sweden participated in the 2014 and 2019 data collections and will participate in a third collection in the autumn/winter of 2025/2026.
EHIS is conducted with a sample of participants in each EU country. The Swedish sample is random and consists of people aged 15 and older. Both online and paper questionnaires are used in the collection of data. Statistics Sweden is responsible for the distribution of the survey on behalf of the Public Health Agency of Sweden.
